How to Prep for a Security Install

You've scheduled your security system installation—great! A little preparation before the technicians arrive can ensure the installation goes smoothly, finishes on time, and meets your expectations. Here's exactly what to do.

One Week Before Installation

Confirm Camera and Sensor Locations

Review your installation plan and walk through your property. Think about:

  • Have you rearranged furniture or changed layouts since the site survey?
  • Are there any new blind spots or areas you want monitored?
  • Do you want any changes to camera mounting heights or angles?

Contact your installer if you need to make changes before installation day.

Verify Network and Power Access

For IP camera systems and smart security devices, ensure:

  • Your internet router is accessible and functioning properly
  • You have available ethernet ports or plan for wireless connectivity
  • Power outlets are available near equipment locations (NVR, control panel, etc.)
  • WiFi passwords and network information are readily available

Clear Installation Areas

Make technicians' jobs easier by:

  • Moving furniture away from walls where cameras or sensors will be mounted
  • Clearing pathways to attics, closets, or utility rooms
  • Removing items stored against walls in equipment installation areas
  • Ensuring ladders can be safely positioned

The Day Before Installation

Arrange for Attic/Crawl Space Access

Many installations require running wires through attics, crawl spaces, or between floors. Ensure:

  • Attic access panels are clear and accessible
  • You've noted any areas with low insulation or fragile ceilings
  • Crawl space entry points are unlocked and accessible
  • Any storage in these areas has been moved aside

Secure Pets

Even friendly pets can be startled by installation work. Plan to:

  • Keep dogs secured in a separate room or outside the work areas
  • Inform technicians about any pets that may be anxious
  • Consider pet sensors for alarm systems to avoid false triggers

Notify Building Management (if applicable)

For commercial properties or condos:

  • Notify property management of installation date
  • Obtain any required permits or approvals
  • Arrange for after-hours access if needed
  • Confirm exterior camera placement complies with HOA/building rules

Installation Day

Be Present for Walk-Through

Be available when technicians arrive for:

  • Initial walk-through to confirm equipment placement
  • Questions about wire routing preferences
  • Discussion of any installation challenges or changes
  • Final system demonstration and training

Designate a Primary Contact

If you can't be present the entire time, designate someone who:

  • Can make decisions about equipment placement
  • Has authority to approve any installation changes
  • Can provide access to all necessary areas
  • Will be available for final walk-through and training

Ask Questions

Don't hesitate to ask technicians:

  • Why they recommend specific camera angles or positions
  • How wire routing will look (hidden vs exposed)
  • Options for concealing or protecting equipment
  • Expected completion time

After Installation

Get Complete Training

Before technicians leave, ensure you understand:

  • How to arm/disarm the system
  • How to view camera footage (live and recorded)
  • How to add or remove user codes
  • How to respond to alerts and notifications
  • Basic troubleshooting steps

Test Everything

Before the installation team leaves:

  • Trigger each sensor to confirm it's working
  • View all camera feeds and verify coverage
  • Test the mobile app and remote access
  • Verify monitoring center connection (if applicable)
  • Confirm you can receive alerts/notifications

Keep Documentation

File away these important items:

  • Equipment manuals and warranty information
  • System diagram showing camera and sensor locations
  • Login credentials for apps and web portals
  • Contact information for support and service
  • Monitoring contract (if applicable)

Common Installation Delays to Avoid

  • Locked gates or doors: Ensure all access points are unlocked
  • Forgotten WiFi passwords: Have network credentials ready
  • Unexpected wiring challenges: Inform installers of any metal studs or concrete walls
  • Last-minute location changes: Confirm all equipment placement in advance
  • Incomplete cleanup: Ask about restoration of any walls or ceilings
